Donn Byrnes is an army brat who grew in the household of a US Army doctor who retired as a general. Being raised in a military family, his pre-war life as a kid was quite adventurous and already very inventive while he got to visit several places that drastically impacted on his future life. Funny thing is that he remembers many menial medical adventures while a World War was raging away, where his heroes where fighting. The contrast of a kid's memories told by a retired colonel is quite amusing.By the time he reached his teens, he already had a considerable experience, eventhough some more interestings things were yet to happen in his life... like it came very handy to have a ranking dad within the doctor's corps to help a color blinded young man get his wings...
Donn's life as a kid takes the reader deep inside a special breed bound to perpetuate family traditions while experiencing severe strains on the family codes : moving every other year from base to base, living appart while dad is detached overseas for long periods while having to grow up being the man of the house in the early teens... there was a price to pay for all these ups and downs and Donn puts it very simply to tell the sad experiences.
The second part of his book is the one where he flies, from T-6 to F-86D, from L-20 to SR-71, while being moved from a assignment to another, from Edwards to Assumption Island and the Pentagon. That is also when he has more direct and fully detailled memories, oppinions and feelings about family and job. The man has a lot of humour and honnesty, and that also brings lots of contrasts as many of his comments are not what you'd expect from a top pilot who was part of two of the most significant USAF programs : the SR-71 Blackbird (check ride #204) and the F-15. What is clear in this book is that being a serviceman essentially means being serviceable at will and that, while family values are strongly pushed forward, family life suffers a lot. One can only admire the plain way he tells it all.
This book is not about planes, it is about being in love with planes and setting an organized life around this drive. And if you are frustrated with the global inertia and lack of decisiveness in your world, this book where frankness prevails is for you !

I found this book to be extremely interesting, especially when the author discussed the many adventures of his life.
I think that most people would enjoy this book as I did, and I found it difficult to put down.
Donn Byrnes writes stores that keep your attention from the first page. 22 years old - piloting a jet- now it's on fire! what to do before during and after ejecting at 14Gs! WOW! and that is just the first chapter. Happy reading.
Is there a justifiable reason why this book is sold at a minimum of $800? I mean, it's not even a hardcover, paper is not that expensive, and it is in no way an ancient document or a historic artifact. Were only five of these books printed or something?
One heck of a romp through a life that runs the gamet of emotions,fun,and family adventures, usually spiced by the author's own curiosity and creative inventiveness. Mix this with an Air Force career and you have a "Wow, what's next?" read. Every page seems to hold a new surprise, and you learn a lot about the inner workings of the USAF, good and not so good,as well as the on-the-go life of a military family. On a personal note Donn Byrnes should be everyone's best friend and handyman!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone wanting a warts and all insight into the life of a down to earth, ever optimistic USAF guy. Donn makes even the mundane an interesting read with his ability to poke fun at his own failings and his witty turn of phrase this is a great insight into the trials and tribulations of military life.
Having read his previous books 'Blackbird Rising' and 'Air Superiority Blue - The F-15 Story', I was looking forward to the completion of this one and I can honestly say I wasn't disapointed.
This is one of the most honest and open autobiographies I've ever read. Yes, it's the story of a USAF fighter pilot and has a lot of "There I was at 30,000 ft" stories. But more, it's the story of a kid growing up in a military family, a young man trying to figure out what he really wants to do with his life, a husband, and a father. Byrnes doesn't hold back on much--it's a life story that includes the good times and the bad times and is told using hundreds of anecdotes--most of them humorous. Besides building up lots of flying hours in the F-86D, U-3, and T-33, Byrnes had the opportunity to be a key participant in several of the great USAF weapons programs of the Cold War--the SR-71 and F-15. His previous two books--Black Bird Rising and Air Superiority Blue--beautifully covered the inside story of the development of these two great aircraft. The current autobiography gives a lot of insight into the man behind those two books and fills in additional details. This is a great read about not just a USAF officer, but a man who served his country during a tough part of its history.
